The Got to Get Got are the Marion Barry’s of ‘Incisor Rock’? What the fuck does that mean? Basically, it’s a multi-dimensional thing. Marion Barry was the former Mayor of Washington, DC that got busted for smoking crack with a hooker and still got re elected because he was a man of the people. ‘Incisor Rock’ was a term Stephen Malkmus used to describe a band called the Push Kings on the back cover of a 1995 7”. So here’s how it fits.. Push Kings sounded like Pavement but they had their own slant and they were a great band. TGTGG get Pavement comparisons but don’t really sound like them, so using a term that was used to describe a band that kinda sorta had a similar sound back in 1995 makes sense. Marion Barry was re elected in 1995, so TGTGG are the second coming of The Push Kings and Marion Barry.

TGTGG mix metaphors with cryptic literal musical references on almost every song on Sahalee. Most references come from mining Mullane’s old cassette collection for Black Flag (My War Mitten Knives Fall), Misfits (Static Age Intro/This is Some Kinda Hate), Push Kings (Macy Macy and the Queen of Spain), Slayer (Tom Araya sang to me, ‘I am the antichrist, it’s what I was meant to be’), Paul Simon and Helium (Me and Julio going underground) and some are less obscure by just naming the bands, like Agnostic Front, Cornershop, “Some Loud Thunder Clap Your Hands Say Boom”.
